What if you remembered every second of your life? Every homework answer, every lost key, every compliment… and every cruel joke, on repeat, forever.
You're 16. That's about 500 million seconds, and you can't forget a single one. It starts as a superpower. Then the nights get worse, a clinic offers to dull it all, and on the night before your appointment, Grandma Rose goes missing. The only map to where she went is the one memory you never wanted to replay.
🧠 First, test yourself: pause at 0:57, look away and say the 7 digits back. Post your score in the comments!

🔬 THE REAL SCIENCE
• Forgetting is normal: without review, much of what we learn fades within a day (Ebbinghaus's forgetting curve).
• Short-term memory holds about 7 ± 2 items (Miller, 1956).
• Forgetting may be a feature, not a bug: the brain actively clears old details so we can adapt (Richards & Frankland, Neuron, 2017).
• People speak roughly 16,000 words a day (Mehl et al., Science, 2007).
• In 2006 scientists described a woman who could recall almost every day of her life (Parker, Cahill & McGaugh). The condition is now called Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM). Only a small number of people have been identified with it.
• In the 1920s, Solomon Shereshevsky remembered so much that he struggled to forget (A. R. Luria, "The Mind of a Mnemonist").
• In dementia, recent memories usually fade first; old ones often last the longest.
❤️ If someone with dementia goes missing, call emergency services right away. Every minute matters.
