For more on the history of WDNL (D-102), Danville, IL, visit the Central Illinois On-Line Broadcast Museum at https://www.dougquick.com. After the record-setting winter of ‘78, Spring included one of the year's major charitable events: the Danville March of Dimes “Super Walk.” It was scheduled on Saturday, May 11, 1978. Unfortunately, the inclement weather wasn’t over yet. The day brought drenching rainstorms that reduced the citywide walking route to the track at Schlarman High School and eventually moved it indoors to the Danville Armory. WDNL sponsored the entertainment party planned for later that day after the walk so that walkers could arrive early at the Armory for a shorter walk. Awards were handed out to those who raised the highest pledges. This aircheck was recorded off-air, with WDAN news director Bill Pickett doing cut-ins to inform participants of the venue change. Even though I recorded my talk track earlier, I was at the walk with my fiancé, whom I would marry during the summer, and we continued on the original route and got soaked, as you would imagine. We were not alone. It’s sad to report that because of changes in Danville's demographics, none of the advertised local businesses exist today.
