Type 1 diabetes affects much more than blood sugar. It touches nearly every part of life, including childhood, school, relationships, family planning, mental health, identity, and major life transitions.
In this candid panel discussion, four speakers will share personal and professional perspectives on living with and supporting people with Type 1 diabetes. The conversation will explore diabetes-related emotional distress, family stress, racial inequities, the harmful labeling of people as “noncompliant,” and the continued lack of mental health support within diabetes care.
Panelists will also examine how bias and systemic racism can appear in healthcare, diabetes programs, and community spaces. Through real-life examples, they will discuss how individuals and organizations can recognize inequities, speak up, and create environments where people from diverse backgrounds feel respected, supported, and included.
Through personal stories, professional insights, and audience questions, this session will remind participants that diabetes may be part of life, but it does not always have to be in the driver’s seat. In alignment with “Diverse Resources for Diverse People,” attendees will explore how mental health services, culturally responsive care, technology, peer support, advocacy, and inclusive communities can help people navigate diabetes in ways that honor their individual experiences.
