Perspective: India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 | 07 September, 2026

Twenty years ago, BRICS began as an idea - bringing together emerging economies with a shared belief that the global order could, and should, be more representative. Today, BRICS is a much larger and more consequential grouping - and in 2026, India has taken centre stage. India assumed the BRICS Chairship for the fourth time on 1st January this year. As the year moves towards its defining moment, New Delhi is preparing to host the 18th BRICS Summit on 12th and 13th September at Bharat Mandapam - bringing together leaders of BRICS Member and Partner Countries, along with Outreach Invitees. But India's Chairship is about more than hosting a summit. It is about asking what BRICS can deliver - for its members, for the Global South, and ultimately, for ordinary people. India has placed a clear vision at the heart of its Chairship: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability. Four priorities - but one larger idea, i.e. Humanity First. An idea that is also reflective of the larger vision India has consistently articulated on the global stage — a vision that places people, peace and inclusive development at the heart of international cooperation. In fact, during his historic address to a special session of the Parliament of Guyana on 21st November 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi articulated this vision through a simple but powerful global mantra: Democracy First, Humanity First. Over the last few months, India has taken the BRICS conversation beyond conference halls - with more than 350 meetings and high-level engagements across over 25 cities, strengthening cooperation across the political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people pillars. And as BRICS marks 20 years since its establishment, India now has an opportunity to shape not just the agenda of a grouping, but the conversation about the kind of global order that emerging economies want to see. So, what does India want its fourth BRICS Chairship to achieve? Can BRICS become a stronger platform for a more representative multilateral system? Can cooperation translate into tangible outcomes in trade, technology, health, climate and development? But most importantly - can BRICS turn the idea of Humanity First into practical cooperation that makes a difference? As India prepares to welcome BRICS leaders to New Delhi, we discuss India’s BRICS Chairship 2026 - its priorities, the challenges and the road ahead.
