There are concerts one merely hears—and then there are concerts into which one disappears. This extraordinary recording belongs to the latter.
Listen beyond the music and notice the almost pin-drop silence of a large audience gathered before Yesudas. Though hundreds may be present, the hall seems to hold its breath as the music unfolds. The sweetness of his voice, the serenity of the compositions and the devotional intensity of his singing draw listeners into an inner world where music and prayer seem almost indistinguishable.
This is Yesudas in 1982, at 42, with his voice in magnificent form: sweet yet authoritative, pristine yet powerful. He can caress the gentlest phrase and then rise through the architecture of a raga with effortless command. Every note feels carefully placed, yet nothing sounds calculated. A gamaka unfolds; a phrase bends and glides; a note rises, hovers and returns. An ancient raga seems newly alive.
Abhogi opens the concert with the graceful Evvari Bodha varnam, setting the musical canvas. Hindolavasantam follows in Santana Rama, bringing the compositional world of Muthuswami Dikshitar into focus.
Then comes Mokshamu Galada. Tyagaraja’s profound reflection on music and liberation takes on special significance in the hands of a singer whose life has been inseparable from music. In Saramati, the melody turns inward and the concert hall grows quieter still. Kedaragowla follows with its own classical fragrance before the brilliance of Hamsadhwani announces Vatapi Ganapatim.
Throughout, M. Chandrasekharan’s violin engages in a living conversation with the vocalist. It listens, responds, reflects and returns each musical thought. Beneath them, Palghat R. Raghu gives the concert its rhythmic life, supporting the music with strength and sensitivity while leaving the vocalist room to explore. M. A. Krishnamurti’s ghatam adds another colour to the ensemble.
Pavanaguru in Hamsanandi reveals a luminous, meditative dimension of Yesudas’s artistry. Finally, Rakshamam Sharanagatam brings this volume towards its close in the commanding atmosphere of Gambhira Nattai.
What must it have been like to sit among that Bangalore audience in 1982? We cannot return physically to that evening, but this recording allows us to travel back. The auditorium lives again; the violin answers; the mridangam resonates; the audience falls silent—and that voice rises once more.
This is why archival recordings are treasures. They preserve not merely sound, but a moment in India's musical history: a great singer, distinguished accompanists and an audience united by the transforming power of Carnatic music.
Come, become part of that audience. Put aside the present for a while, close your eyes and listen. Allow the Celestial Singer to carry you back to Bangalore, 1982.
🙏 VOL. 2 OF THIS REMARKABLE CONCERT WILL FOLLOW SOON.
If this rare performance touches you, please share it with fellow lovers of Carnatic music so that these precious recordings may reach future generations.
