AIR LINE is my second song in my Naples, Florida series. I recommend listening to the first song entitled NAPLES. There are more songs in this series that interconnect and the set of songs fits into the largest 1000 piece puzzle box. I worked a long time on this song and the cover art.
This is tropical paradise dream that Joe Smith offers to Jane Doe a few years before the War of the Lawn. Their life is depressing at home. This is their tropical getaway, their dream, their escape, until it is not, until it collapses.
Thus, the music should believe in the paradise. The darkness comes from the story eventually, not from the sound. It should feel like an intoxicating escape: warm, beautiful, hopeful, slightly surreal, with enough emotional depth to foreshadow the collapse. I think 80 BPM hit the spot for that lush, dreamy bittersweet flow. This song makes me cry. I hope you enjoy it. 165 songs and counting…
Original lyrics (c) 2026 by Phoenix Genesis:
AIR LINE
They came to the Gulf with a line in the sand,
A measure of earth they could hold in their hands.
They said the world wasn’t shaped as it seemed,
That truth could be measured if truth could be seen.
They built an Air Line,
straight out toward the blue,
A ruler against the world
to prove what they knew.
They measured the distance.
They measured the ground.
They searched for the place
where the straight line turned round.
And all afternoon
the Gulf shimmered white,
The horizon lay waiting,
perfect and bright.
Air Line.
Air Line.
Straight as a promise,
thin as a lie.
Follow the line.
Follow it south.
Follow the blue
till it runs out.
———
And Joe had an Air Line too.
A line to Naples.
A line to the coast.
A line between
what he had
and what he had lost.
He said:
There’s a way out.
There’s a place we can go.
There’s a life waiting there
that nobody knows.
Jane heard the promise.
She wanted it true.
A house by the water.
A sky turning blue.
No questions behind us.
No ghosts at the door.
No one remembers
the people we were before.
Air Line.
Air Line.
Straight through the secrets,
thin as a lie.
Follow the line.
Follow it south.
Just get far enough
and nobody finds out.
———
The Koreshans searched
for the shape of the earth.
Joe searched for the place
where his old life lost worth.
They wanted a world
that curved toward their view.
Joe wanted a world
that would make him brand new.
But the Gulf kept moving.
The shoreline kept shifting.
The horizon looked close
while the distance kept drifting.
A straight line is easy
when you draw it in sand.
Harder to follow
when it leaves your hand.
Because every line
has a beginning.
Every line
has an end.
And every way out
is a way in again.
———
Air Line.
Out over the water.
Out past the shore.
Air Line.
One mile, then another,
then one mile more.
Air Line.
Measure the distance.
Measure the ground.
Air Line.
Keep walking straight
until you come back around.
———
At sunset the Gulf
turns gold in the haze.
The palms barely move
and the water still stays.
A dolphin breaks silver
and disappears.
The world looks so simple
from here.
From here.
Joe looks south.
Jane looks too.
The line disappears
into the blue.
And for one little moment
the dream feels true.
Air Line.
Straight through the secrets.
Straight through the shame.
Straight through the years
and the wreckage and blame.
Just follow the line.
Just follow it south.
Just get far enough
and nobody finds out.
But lines can be measured.
And lines can be crossed.
And sometimes the shortest way out
is the road
to what you’ve lost.
———
The Koreshans searched
for the shape of the earth.
Joe searched for the place
where his old life lost worth.
They wanted a world
that curved toward their view.
Joe wanted a world
that would make him brand new.
But the world doesn’t owe us
the shape that we choose.
And the line doesn’t care
what we hope it will prove.
Air Line.
Follow it.
Follow it.
Follow it south.
Until the blue
runs out.
