It’s extremely popular for shopping, but the city has a very unique character because of its Cantonese traditions and culture, which are reflected in its architecture and food. Since it’s very close to Shenzhen, we decided to take a day trip here and mainly explored three different areas. First, the old town of Yongqing Fang, where you can still see traditional Cantonese style buildings, gardens, museums, cafés and souvenir shops. And the highlight for us was Legendary Bruce Lee’s childhood home. Guangzhou was opened up to foreign trade under the Treaty of Nanking, and the influence of foreign cultures can still be seen in Shamian Island. It’s also becoming popular for its Harry Potter themed Starbucks. And finally, the modern, futuristic downtown, filled with skyscrapers, offices and malls, and home to the Canton Tower. The tower is also famous for having the world’s first horizontal Ferris wheel.
