We are diving into a historical clash on the high seas. A house-ruled Black Seas recreation of the Action off Valparaíso, fought on March 28th, 1814. Off the coast of Chile, the USS Essex, commanded by Captain David Porter, faced off against the British frigate HMS Phoebe and sloop-of-war HMS Cherub. The American frigate, damaged and cornered in Valparaíso harbor, was determined to break out……or go down fighting. For this game, we used our modified Black Seas rules: with among others updated boarding actions, advanced rules for ship maneuvers and custom critical hit charts, taking into account cannon caliber and range. We also used a signaling system with hoists as the only communication allowed by the captains during the battle. The table layout mirrored the Valparaíso bay, with coastal terrain and harbor shallows.
