Join me for some creative dahlia photography, from an unexpectedly windy visit to a specialist Dahlia nursery to photographing these beautiful flowers at home. I’ll be experimenting with macro flower photography, focus stacking, a vintage Meyer Görlitz Primoplan lens and textures to create everything from detailed floral portraits to soft, dreamy images. We happened to be passing Halls of Heddon Dahlias in Northumberland and decided to pop in for a quick look. With thousands of dahlias in bloom, an incredible variety of flowers and plenty of butterflies and pollinators, it was a photographer’s dream… apart from the 30mph wind! Luckily, Michael treated me to a beautiful bouquet to take home, where the flowers were considerably better behaved. In this video I’ll show you my simple home setup using a light tent, printed backgrounds and diffused light. I’ll photograph the dahlias in several different ways — using my Sony A7III and 90mm macro lens for more detailed images, focus stacking for greater depth of field, and my vintage Meyer Görlitz Primoplan for something much softer and dreamier. And because I can rarely resist tinkering with a perfectly good photograph, I’ll also take a couple of the images into Photoshop and add textures to create a more painterly finish. 🌸 Want to explore creative textures and overlays? I’ve recently released The Creative Photographer’s Guide to Textures & Overlays, where I go much deeper into how I choose, layer, blend and mask textures to transform photographs and create atmosphere. It includes 15 creative textures, 15 photographs to practice with and five supporting videos, including a full real-time dreamy floral edit. ➡️ The Creative Photographer’s Guide to Textures & Overlays: https://tinyurl.com/textureebook 🎨 Texture packs used in this video: Floral Dreams: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/45669...
