My seven year old just took the IXL diagnostic and scored above grade level in every area, with a 400 in geometry, which is beginning of fourth grade. He's a young second grader. I want to share exactly what we used to get here, because I was homeschooling with a newborn and then a toddler and I really didn't do anything extra.
One honest caveat up front: I read some of the questions to him. The diagnostic is adaptive so the questions got hard, and he isn't reading at a third or fourth grade level. I wanted to see what math he knew, separate from the reading. Take any test with a grain of salt.
Our math stack
Math with Confidence has been our base since kindergarten. We did four lessons a week, start to finish, even when kindergarten felt too easy for him. I taught fifth grade math, and I have seen what happens when the early conceptual foundation is shaky, so I trusted the process instead of skipping ahead.
Third grade multiplication units, pulled early. In first grade he started rattling off multiplication facts, so I tested him. I asked what four times three actually means, and he pulled out Magna-Tiles and built an array. So we shuffled the three multiplication units from third grade Math with Confidence into our first grade year.
Numberblocks is where he learned his multiplication facts, and I mean that literally. I thought it was teaching counting and numbers one through ten. He binged it on his own and came out knowing his facts and understanding arrays. I taught him none of it.
Beast Academy online is what we sprinkle in for rigor. Just the online version, not the workbooks. When he has free time and wants more, he does a lesson. It pushes further than Math with Confidence does.
What we're doing for second grade: same stack, moving faster through Math with Confidence based on the diagnostic, one math facts sheet a day during morning work, Numberblocks on his morning menu, and IXL practice to fill specific gaps.
