Nepal Flash Flood |195 Himalayan Glacial Lakes Pose Risk Odia News A flash flood incident in Nepal has once again raised concerns over the growing risks associated with Himalayan glacial lakes. A recent government survey has identified more than 200 glacial lakes in the Himalayan region that could potentially pose a threat to India. The Himalayas are home to around 7,500 glacial lakes, with nearly 10% located in and around Sikkim. As many as 25 glacial lakes in the Sikkim region are being closely monitored due to their potentially dangerous conditions. Several glacial lakes are also located within the Ganga river basin. In October 2023, the bursting of a Himalayan glacial lake in Sikkim triggered a devastating flood, sending a massive volume of water downstream. Following such incidents, India’s National Disaster Management authorities have intensified studies of vulnerable glacial lakes.
