Every morning Dorian Gray walks back into the world wearing the same beautiful face. Every night, the portrait upstairs keeps what that face refuses to show. Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, this dark fairytale pop-folk nightmare is told from Dorian’s point of view as secrecy becomes violence, beauty becomes an alibi, and the only witness that cannot be charmed is the canvas itself. 🎧 Listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6MzUS... LYRICS Once upon a nightmare, the attic key is cold. My heartbeat climbs the staircase first. Below, the house is all perfume and gold; up here, the varnish starts to thirst. I turn the lock with a trembling hand. Dust lifts like breath around my shoes. The canvas tightens on its wooden bones; a painted mouth learns newer truths. My glass downstairs still gives me spring, smooth skin, bright eyes, a boyish name. But every step above the chandelier brings me closer to the thing that changed. The frame gives one dry little knock. The cloth pulls tight beneath the light. I touch my cheek; it stays untouched. The other face grows old tonight. Every morning I come down beautiful, every night I leave my face upstairs. I button youth around my throat, I comb the years out of my hair. Every morning I come down beautiful— and no one knows what beauty wears. Basil stands inside the locked room now. I let him see what praise became. His voice goes thin; the painted eyes hold every choice beneath my name. He says there is still time to turn. My hand closes hard around the knife. I bring it down; his warning ends. The attic swallows what I've done. The frame gives one dry little knock. The painted mouth has learned to smile. I wash my hands; my face stays young. The mirror greets me like a child. Every morning I come down beautiful, every night I leave my face upstairs. I button youth around my throat, I comb the years out of my hair. Every morning I come down beautiful— one less witness knows what beauty wears. I spare one girl and call it goodness. I climb to see the damage fade. Instead the eyes grow sly with virtue; even mercy wears a masquerade. The room tilts under both my feet. At last the canvas makes it plain: it never taught my hand to choose, it only kept what I became. Every morning I come down beautiful, but beauty is the mask I chose. I kept the face, I kept the secret, I kept each debt where no one goes. Every morning I come down beautiful— tonight I pay what beauty owes. The same bright knife is in my hand. I raise it toward the painted heart. The canvas screams beneath the blade; the years rush hot beneath my skin. The portrait clears. The room goes still. My borrowed face belongs to time. The moral of this nightmare is... beauty can hide the years, but never the choices. #ThePictureOfDorianGray #DorianGray #OscarWilde #DarkFolk #GothicMusic #DarkFantasy #OnceUponANightmare
