What Did Ancient Egyptians Wear to Bed at Night? In this video, we go looking for something the Egyptians barely wrote down: what an ordinary person actually put on before lying down for the night. We trace linen back to the flax fields, to the Tarkhan dress recovered at a tomb near Cairo in 1913 and unfolded by conservators only in 1977, and to the wooden weaving models found in the tomb of the chancellor Meketre, around 1990 BCE. We sit on the strange raised beds of Deir el-Medina and meet the curved wooden headrest, the "pillow" that let your head hover in midair. We check the Turin Strike Papyrus, where clothing was worth walking off the job for, and Herodotus's account of Egyptians sleeping under fishing nets to keep off the gnats — backed up by real bedbugs found at Amarna and scorpion stings logged in the workmen's attendance records. We meet Bes, the ugliest god in Egypt, grinning down from bedroom walls to guard the sleeping, and Chester Beatty III, the dream book once owned by the scribe Qenherkhepshef.
