Subtraction = Adding a Loss

In this video, we dig into how to help students build a real conceptual understanding of subtraction—including what happens when we subtract a bigger number from a smaller one. Using a vertical number line, we model expressions like 8 − 4, 8 − 8, and 8 − 9, walking through the language of "losing" and connecting it to direction (up or down) on the number line. From there, we extend into debt/depth language (12 and a debt of 17) to show students that subtracting a larger number from a smaller one isn't impossible—it's just movement into negative numbers.
