Episode 12: Faith to be Surely Healed
In Mark chapter 2, it talks about how the paralytic met Jesus. This person was unable to walk. People had to carry him on a bed and bring him. Capernaum is a port city along the coast of the Sea of Galilee and it's kind of far from Nazareth of Galilee. But Jesus went to Capernaum and did a lot of works there. I've been to Capernaum and the synagogue of that time is all crumbled down. There was a wall and just some remains. That was a place where Jesus would go and preach the word. What we read today, I don't think it was a Sabbath day. I don't think that's why Jesus did not go to the synagogue of Capernaum to preach the word. He was at a house preaching the word and people brought a man sick of the palsy to Jesus. But the house was so packed with people that they couldn't get in. There was nothing they could do.
You don't really have to make roadways on a mountain if people just keep walking back and forth it creates ways. When there's a lot of people coming in and going, that's when they build roads, lay the asphalt and what not. When necessary, people build tunnels and also bridges. That's what makes it able and convenient. For cars to go back and forth. Same thing and the way to come to Jesus. If the ways are already pre-made, it would be nice. But they had no way to reach Jesus even though they had come. There was the way when they brought the paralytic on the bed all day to that house. But when they got to the house there was no more way to get to Jesus. The place was packed with people. They were just at the entrance and there was nothing they could do. Even though there is no way when necessary, we walk over mountains, walk through the desert, walk through the wilderness.
When the roadways are well made, to make it even nicer, they lay asphalt on them. They make it even better, build tunnels and build bridges. That's what people do. This is also true with the way to come to Jesus. When you have a pastor of a nice church with hundreds of people gathered
and teaching them the good way to meet Jesus and go to heaven. All the church members could meet Jesus and rejoice and live a spiritual life like that. But actually just because you go to a big church does that mean you will necessarily meet Jesus. This man here was unable to go to Jesus on his own. There was no way for him to figure out how to meet Jesus. He could not move but the people laid him on the bed and brought him. It was packed with people, even people could not get in. How are they to bring in a bed? They thought, "No, this is not gonna work. We're not gonna be able to meet him today. Maybe next time when it's less crowded." Maybe some of them thought like that.
But when they have the faith that surely he will be healed, "Let's look for another way. Is there a backdoor? Is there a side door or is there no other way at all?" But one route, they found was "Let's go to the roof, uncover it and come down." But how do they come down from the roof? The only way is to uncover and remove the tiles of the roof so they can come down. Here they needed faith. Suppose they uncovered the roof and let down the paralytic. If he gets healed of the disease repairing the roof, oh that's not a problem. It's laborious and takes a little bit of money but it's doable. But even though he meets Jesus and he does not get healed, repairing the roof and everything will be a problem. This is the difference between the people that need Jesus and the people that do not.
