The Boötes Void is a cosmic void sitting in the spring sky beyond Arcturus and the constellation Boötes, in the direction the handle of the Big Dipper points. In 1981 a redshift survey measured 133 galaxy distances through 3 separate patches of that region, each patch about 35 degrees from the others. Published widths for it still run from around 250 million light-years up to around 330 million, depending on which survey is taken and which value of the expansion rate that survey assumed, and the range is a real disagreement between real pieces of work rather than sloppiness. The popular account of this region, the one about a hole in the universe, is incomplete. Tonight is the approach, the width, and the crossing, taken slowly and in order. Here at Sleeping Cosmos, we build long-form space documentaries for quiet hours. The pace is slow on purpose. Nothing rushes, nothing shouts, and nothing asks you to keep up. Just one idea settling into the next, out through the solar system and into the quiet parts of the sky that most people never think about. Good for: 😴 Falling asleep — steady narration and long, unhurried stretches of the cosmos 📖 Reading or studying — calm pacing and clear explanations that sit in the background 🌘 Winding down — for anyone who likes the big questions asked gently space documentary for sleep, relaxing space documentary, facts about space, things we do not know about space, science documentary to fall asleep to, calm space video, deep space explained simply, what is out there in space, what is the bootes void, how big is the bootes void, where is the bootes void in the sky, how far away is the bootes void, how long would it take to cross the bootes void, the great nothing in space, biggest empty space in the universe, how to find arcturus in the night sky, why are there empty regions in space, how galaxies are spread across the universe, distance to the nearest galaxy from earth, what a redshift survey actually measures
