You can teach skills. You can teach knowledge. But you can’t manufacture character, attitude, drive, energy, or talent.
In this video, Dave Anderson explains why building a high-performance team starts with hiring the right people, developing them intentionally, and creating a culture where people can make mistakes, learn, and improve.
One of the biggest hiring mistakes leaders make is lowering their standards when they become desperate to fill a position. As Dave explains, desperation rises and standards fall. But hiring someone simply because you need coverage can create bigger performance problems later.
“Don’t send ducks to Eagle School.”
When you hire people, they need to bring something to the table. Character, attitude, drive, energy, and talent give a leader something to develop. Skills and knowledge can be taught, but those deeper qualities are much harder to change.
That’s why Dave’s approach is simple: hire slower. And if you discover you made the wrong hire, fire faster.
But hiring the right people is only the beginning.
Great leaders also invest in employee training and development. Leaders sometimes hesitate to train people because they’re afraid employees will leave after they’ve invested time and money into them. Dave shares Zig Ziglar’s reminder that there’s something worse than training people and having them leave: not training them and having them stay.
Preparation builds confidence and reduces stress.
The best time to prepare your people isn’t when they’re standing in front of a customer. It’s between opportunities — through practicing, drilling, rehearsing, coaching, accountability, and consistent development.
Dave also explains why leaders need to create an environment where mistakes aren’t fatal.
If people are terrified of making mistakes, they eventually stop trying. They stop taking initiative. They shift into maintenance mode instead of pursuing breakthroughs.
The goal isn’t to eliminate mistakes.
Make more mistakes. Don’t repeat them.
People who try new things, learn from what went wrong, and take a better shot the next time become stronger, wiser, and more valuable. But when someone repeatedly makes the same mistakes without learning, it may reveal a deeper issue with coachability.
