Gregor MacGregor sold London a fake country called Poyais, and about 250 people sailed off to live there. History's Greatest Cons #1. In 1822, a Scottish soldier who called himself "Sir Gregor" and "Cazique of Poyais" sold investors a whole nation: a bank, an army, government bonds, banknotes, and a 355-page guidebook describing a capital with paved boulevards, an opera house and rivers full of gold. A respected London bank even issued a £200,000 Poyais government loan. The land on the Mosquito Coast of today's Honduras was real. The country was not. When the settler ships reached the Black River, there was only rainforest and old ruins, and most of the people who sailed never came home. And the strangest part is how MacGregor's own story ends. Death and survivor figures are historians' estimates (mainly David Sinclair's count); contemporary sources disagree on exact numbers.
