Once shaped largely by shipping, railway infrastructure and industrial activity, the lakeshore has gradually evolved into a place where people can walk, cycle, relax and enjoy public spaces beside Lake Ontario. The revitalization of Queens Quay West brought major improvements to the central waterfront, including a tree-lined promenade, cycling connections and better access to the lake. The waterfront streetcar corridor also became an important part of the area's identity, connecting downtown Toronto with the Harbourfront. Toronto's waterfront transformation continues today. One of the newest major additions is Biidaasige Park, where former industrial lands in the Port Lands have been transformed into a large public green space featuring trails, naturalized river landscapes, cycling routes and views of the city. Additional parkland opened in July 2026, creating even more opportunities to explore Toronto's evolving shoreline. The waterfront is a fascinating example of how a major North American city can reconnect its downtown with the lake while creating new places for nature, recreation and community life.
