Welcome to the Roundest Planet Contest! But when Earth measures Jupiter… side to side and top to bottom are not the same!
In this episode: Jupiter thinks he's squished — did he eat too many comets? No way! Jupiter spins faster than any other planet: one whole day on Jupiter is less than ten hours. Like pizza dough spinning on a plate, spinning fast makes Jupiter's middle push out. That puffy middle is called a bulge. Saturn bulges even more, and Earth bulges just a teeny tiny bit. Jupiter doesn't win "roundest"… but he wins FASTEST SPINNER!
Science word: bulge (a part that pushes out in the middle)
Real fact: A day on Jupiter is about 9 hours and 56 minutes. Jupiter is about 143,000 km wide around the middle but about 134,000 km from top to bottom. (NASA) In the cartoon, the squish is made bigger so you can see it.
