This New York Asylum Would Cost $215 Million to Erase — So New York Is Letting It Rot

This is Kings Park Psychiatric Center, once one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in the United States, and the State of New York has known exactly what it would take to finally tear it down since two thousand ten, when an engineering study put the total cost at two hundred fifteen million dollars. Fifteen years later, the tower is still standing exactly where that number left it. The hospital was built to be self-sufficient, generating its own power, growing its own food, running its own rail spur onto the property so it would never depend on the outside world. That same completeness is the reason its ruins are now too large, too contaminated, and too expensive for the state that owns them to simply walk away from.
