Nineveh was once one of the most powerful and feared cities of the ancient world. According to the Bible, God sent Jonah to warn the city of its coming destruction—but Nineveh repented, and the city was spared. So why was Nineveh eventually destroyed? Generations after Jonah, Nineveh became the heart of the mighty Assyrian Empire. Its kings conquered kingdoms, expanded their territory, and built enormous palaces and defensive walls. Then another biblical prophet, Nahum, delivered a very different warning. In 612 BC, Babylonian and Median forces attacked Nineveh. The once-powerful city fell, and centuries later its ruins were rediscovered beneath the earth. In this episode of History Unfolded, we explore the biblical story of Jonah and Nineveh, the prophecy of Nahum, the rise and fall of the Assyrian Empire, and the archaeological and historical evidence surrounding Nineveh’s destruction. Was Nineveh really spared once—only to be destroyed generations later? Watch until the end as we uncover what happened to one of the Bible’s most famous ancient cities.
