Can Guests Escape? 6 Hotel Fire Checks Before Nightfall Nine people died in an overnight hotel fire in Kolkata, India. For Facility Managers, the incident raises a simple but important question: If a fire started in your building tonight, could the occupants actually get out? In this episode of The Ward FM Update, I look at six practical checks that Facility Managers, building managers and property professionals should consider before a building moves into after-hours operation: • Escape routes — are they actually clear and usable? • Emergency lighting — will occupants find their way in darkness or smoke? • Fire alarms — can sleeping occupants hear them? • Fire doors — are they functioning or being defeated operationally? • After-hours readiness — does the person on duty know what to do? • Accountability — can you establish whether everyone has evacuated? I also look at a risk that is easily overlooked: what happens when the person working after hours isn't the person who normally works that shift? A day-shift operator may know a building extremely well during normal hours, but the same building can operate very differently at night, on weekends and on public holidays. Your emergency arrangements therefore need to work even when the experienced manager or usual night-shift employee isn't there. The Kolkata fire remains under investigation, and this video does not attempt to determine its cause.
