In 1698, Scotland put a huge share of all its money into one idea: a trading colony in Panama that would make the country rich. What could go wrong? Jungle. Disease. A cargo of wool and combs that nobody in the tropics wanted. Spain. A hurricane. And England quietly making sure nobody helped. Within a few years the money was gone, and in 1707 Scotland signed the Act of Union with England. This is the Darien Scheme.
