We sink from 200 meters, where sunlight starts to fade, to 6,000 meters, the deepest NOAA's robot Deep Discoverer can go — using real footage from NOAA Ocean Exploration dives. Then we look at what lies even deeper, in the hadal zone. Chapters 0:00 Intro 0:43 The twilight zone (200–1,000 m) 2:35 The midnight zone (1,000–4,000 m) 4:42 The abyss (4,000–6,000 m) 6:25 The hadal zone & what we haven't seen Footage (NOAA Ocean Exploration): • "Casper" octopod, 4,290 m — Hohonu Moana 2016: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Midwater exploration — Deep Connections 2019: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Bluntnose sixgill shark, ~600 m — Voyage to the Ridge 2022: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Greenland shark & ROV Deep Discoverer, ~780 m — Northeast U.S. Canyons Expedition 2013: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Siphonophore, ~800 m — Deep-Sea Symphony: Exploring the Musicians Seamounts (2017): https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Hagfish, 970 m — 2023 Shakedown + EXPRESS West Coast Exploration: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Giant grenadier, 1,433 m — Seascape Alaska 3 (2023): https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Bigfin squid, 2,385 m — Windows to the Deep 2021: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Black smoker vent, 2,947 m — Voyage to the Ridge 2022: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • "Golden orb", ~3,300 m — Seascape Alaska 5 (2023): https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Crossota jellyfish, ~3,700 m — 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Giant grenadier, 4,250 m — Seascape Alaska 5 (2023): https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... • Isopods, 4,810 m and 5,830+ m — 2016 Deepwater Exploration of the Marianas: https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim... · https://oceanexplorer.noaa.gov/multim...
