🏰 Kidwelly Castle Kidwelly Castle is one of the most complete and best-preserved Norman-era fortresses in Wales. History: Established in the early 12th century as a wooden ringwork fortress, it was later rebuilt in stone. It features a unique, sophisticated "concentric" layout (a castle within a castle) that allowed archers to fire from two tiers of walls simultaneously. It is also famously associated with the warrior princess Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, who led an army against the Normans nearby. The Experience: Visitors can walk the near-complete battlements, explore dark rooms and towers, and enjoy panoramic 360-degree views of the countryside. It is managed by Cadw. History: It was originally founded in 1114 as a Benedictine Priory by the Normans, serving as a religious counterpart to the nearby castle. The current structure primarily dates back to the 14th century. The Experience: Known as a hidden historical jewel, the church features an impressive interior with a soaring nave, an striking spire, and a medieval statue of the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Kidwelly) that survived the Reformation.
