Changelog:
Primarily uses the version from May 30th, 2021 as a base, but takes elements from other versions.
The main instrumental is from the aforementioned version. Meanwhile, a camera flash, a secondary synth, and some additional snares are taken from the stems of “Hawk” that leaked, and the ending bass and reverse snare come from the June 23, 2021 version.
While most vocals come from the May 30th, 2021 version, there’s punch-ins I included from the June 23rd version and the “No Snare Perc v.1” version. I additionally added in Digital Nas’s verse and chorus from his original version of the song as a verse slot.
The arrangement is now Ye chorus - Ye verse - Ye chorus and bridge - Digital Nas chorus (half) - Digital Nas verse - Ye chorus - Ye breakdown - another Ye verse - Ye chorus - Digital Nas outro - extended instrumental outro.
Turned the clap down in the main instrumental, while raising the super sub-bass area and making a deep cut at about 8kHz.
Cut a lot of low and low-mids in the previously mentioned additional synth, while also raising some of the high-mids. This synth doesn’t always show up, but when it does I think it elevates the energy.
During Digital Nas’s verse, I added in a camera flash sound when he says “camera flash”. There’s a delay on it to let it echo out.
After the DN verse and Ye chorus, the beat drops out like in the original leak. However, I doubled the time it’s cut out for and added in additional kicks and snares during part of the drop. The kick is just the main kick in the song turned down, while the snare is from the “Hawk” stem leak. I removed a lot of mids and raised the treble of the snare.
The outro of the song is now super fleshed out. First off, I let it go an additional 16 bars past where it typically ends. During most of it, there’s the reversed snare and bass from the June 23rd version; the snare had some general EQing to change the shape of the sound, while the bass had all high end above 1.7kHz removed with some additional saturation added to it.
Also during this outro I added in the hi-hats from the main beat but half-timed, giving the ending a weird slowed and distorted feeling.
For the final leg of the outro, I just made it the main melody track of the beat with an added reverb trail out.
As I said before, I took vocals from a bunch of different spots. I cut up some vocals in Ye’s verses, replacing lines in one version with lines from another, and cutting out all DN background vocals during the choruses. It’s pretty much the same arrangement as the initial leaks, just with a few lines shifted around.
Ye’s vocal chain started with a high-pass filter that cut off anything below 100Hz, with an additional small dip to the low end from 100Hz to 300Hz. Then there was some compression and de-essing, followed by a lot of very minor EQ adjustments made over multiple plugins. I won’t bore with every small detail but there’s quite a bit here.
I also added some additional reverb and delay to Ye’s vocals that ducks down when his vocals are playing.
From the end of the breakdown to the start of the final chorus, the vocals sounded very very different from the rest. To try to counteract this, I added in a little bit of iZotope Vinyl and a lot of extra high end, and I think it helped out a good bit. Additionally, the line “and we’ll only invite” near the very end of the song had extra low end pumped into it to help match the rest of the vocals.
Digital Nas’s vocals were pretty simple to mix. The chain was incredibly similar to Ye’s, but with some small changes to the minor EQ adjustments. I also added a reverb and delay to him, but I believe I made DN’s much more intense.
For DN’s outro singing, I added some additional autotune, followed by just a bit of compression, a small amount of high end cut, and a lot of low end cut. I also added a very, very large reverb and an echo that plays near the end of each line.
Cut a lot of breaths and other noises out of the vocals here and there.
This is probably not everything! I worked on this song for a few days so I think I’m missing some notes, but most of it is accounted for.
Mastered to match typical streaming volume.
