King Richard crossed through England, From the castle to the glen, He'd heard the tales of Robin Hood And all his Merry Men. So dressed beneath a traveller's cloak, Without his crown of gold, He rode into the heart of Sherwood To find the man so bold. No trumpet spoke his royal name, No banner flew that day, Only hoofbeats through the forest As the stranger made his way. Robin Hood and King Richard, Under Sherwood's ancient tree, One man wore the crown of England, One man lived among the free. Raise the horn and draw the longbow, Let the greenwood voices ring For honour stands above the gold Of an outlaw or a king! Robin met the cloaked old stranger Where the forest pathway turned, “Share our bread and share our fire, For a welcome must be earned.” They drank beneath the branches, While the Merry Men sang loud, And Richard watched their fellowship, Far from every royal crowd. Robin Hood and King Richard, Under Sherwood's ancient tree, One man wore the crown of England, One man lived among the free. Raise the horn and draw the longbow, Let the greenwood voices ring For honour stands above the gold Of an outlaw or a king! Then the stranger cast his cloak aside, And silence filled the glade, For there before the Merry Men King Richard stood displayed. Robin bowed before his sovereign, But Richard raised his hand: “Stand, Robin Hood of Sherwood A true heart need not bend.” Robin Hood and King Richard, Hear the bells of England ring! From the halls of ancient castles To the greenwood where they sing. Raise the cup for loyal friendship, Let the forest voices soar For crown and bow may pass away, But honour lives forevermore! Then Richard rode from Sherwood As the morning sun arose, And Robin watched beneath the oak Where the English greenwood grows.
