What If You Tried to Stand on Io? Same person, same teal sweater, same coffee — this time standing on Io, Jupiter's volcanic moon and the most volcanically active world in the solar system. It's almost exactly the size of our Moon, with almost the same gravity... but the Moon never made these life choices. Soft honesty: the trip to Jupiter takes years, so we skip it, and this time you'll need a pressure suit, a fishbowl helmet, and as much radiation shielding as you can carry. In this What if Universe episode: a pizza-colored surface of sulfur, sulfur-dioxide frost and fresh black lava (and almost no water), gravity of about 18% of Earth's (70 kg feels like 13, a half-meter hop becomes almost 3 m with ~3.5 s of hang time), a black sky with Jupiter about 19° across — more than 35 full Moons wide, roughly your outstretched hand — that never rises or sets, an atmosphere a few billionths of Earth's that freezes and falls as frost during every two-hour Jupiter eclipse, −130 °C ground next to lava over 1,200 °C, umbrella-shaped plumes launched at ~1 km/s (Tvashtar's rose ~330 km for New Horizons in 2007) where sulfur snow goes up before it comes down, Pele's 1,000-km red ring, the mirror-smooth Loki Patera lava lake seen by Juno, rock tides of up to 100 m, tidal heating (about 30x Earth's heat flow, ~400 active volcanoes), the 4:2:1 resonance with Europa and Ganymede that keeps the squeeze going, zero known impact craters, 17.5-km mountains, radiation of roughly 36 sieverts a day, a ton per second leaking into the Io plasma torus (about one cow per second — fitting, given the myth), the 400,000-volt, 3-million-amp electric circuit that leaves Io's footprint in Jupiter's aurora, Galileo's 1610 discovery, the 1979 tidal-heating prediction published three days before Voyager 1 flew by, Linda Morabito's discovery of the first active volcano beyond Earth, Juno's 2024 findings (probably no shallow magma ocean, and a record eruption bigger than Lake Superior that saturated its infrared camera), and three Io myths red-Xed. Io lets you stand. It just never stops moving under your feet — because Jupiter is not letting go. #WhatIf #Science #Physics #Io #Jupiter #Space #Astronomy #Volcanoes #WhatIfUniverse #ThoughtExperiment #Juno #PlanetaryScience What if Universe — ask a stranger question    / @what_if_universe21
