Not Knowing Beforehand (The Plates Of Brass)

Not Knowing Beforehand (The Plates of Brass) What would you do if you were commanded to accomplish something, but didn’t know how you were going to do it? Inspired by 1 Nephi 3–4 in the Book of Mormon, “Not Knowing Beforehand” tells the story of Nephi’s journey into Jerusalem to obtain the brass plates, a record containing the scriptures and the history of his people. Guided by the Holy Spirit, Nephi enters the city without knowing where to go or what awaits him. But his journey takes an unexpected and troubling turn when he discovers Laban lying drunk on the ground. Faced with a command to take Laban’s life, Nephi recoils. He has never killed anyone before, and he does not want to do so. Yet he comes to understand the importance of preserving the records for future generations. Through fear, uncertainty, and difficult choices, Nephi continues his mission, eventually obtaining the brass plates and leaving Jerusalem with Zoram. This original song retells the account through Nephi’s eyes, imagining the emotions he might have experienced while remaining inspired by the scriptural narrative.
