Great Sparring | iRacing Caterham 420R at Donington

Back in the iRacing Caterham 420R, this time heading to Donington Park. I had gotten a fair amount of practice in the night before, and for once it felt like all that practice had actually paid off. I was feeling pretty quick and reasonably confident going into the race. This was a 28-car, 1698 Strength of Field race, and I came in as the number 4 car. Qualifying went well, and I managed to put the Caterham 3rd on the grid, one spot better than my door number. I was pretty happy with that and felt like I had the pace to run near the front. When the lights went out, I got an absolutely monster launch. The only problem was that I wasn't entirely sure what to do with it once I had it. I briefly gained a position, but by the time we made it through Turn 1, I'd given the spot right back. From there, the plan was pretty simple. Settle down, avoid doing anything stupid, and hang onto the draft of the cars ahead. With how important the draft can be in these Caterhams, I knew that losing touch with the group in front could make for a very different race. Eventually, that's exactly what happened. I lost the draft and it looked like my opportunity to fight at the front might be disappearing up the road. But losing the draft certainly didn't mean the racing was over. What followed turned into one of the best back-and-forth sparring matches I've had in a long time, with neither of us seemingly willing to let the other one get away.
