“Il nemico”... cerchiamo carri armati all’orizzonte.
Piove. Prima saliamo in montagna.
Praticamente perfetto.

AUSTRALIA 17 | BRISBANE AT 40°C, THEN THE SKY EXPLODES ⛈️ “The Enemy” Arrives | Bike Vlog | ENG DUB
There are mangoes everywhere. A guest at the showground tells us about them, and we make the mistake of listening. Before long, the camper looks like a tropical fruit stall: huge, ripe, fragrant mangoes crammed into every last centimetre of space. The little fridge is at breaking point. We, on the other hand, are delighted, because letting all that fruit rot would be a crime.
With our tropical sugar reserves on board, we set off on foot for the station. Destination: Brisbane.
We’re well into the subtropics now, and the heat is a constant presence. The railway worker warns us that “the enemy” will arrive around midday. He says it with a straight face. “The enemy”... for a moment, we scan the horizon for tanks. What’s coming is the sweltering heat, and Brisbane lets the temperature sail past 40°C as it lies peacefully along its river at South Bank: parks, waterfront walks, open-air cafés and restaurants, even a beach in the middle of the city.
It’s the Brisbane River that holds everything together: it divides the city and stitches it back together, with people stretched out in the parks whenever it’s possible to breathe. But Brisbane is also about culture, with GOMA, Brisbane Powerhouse, contemporary art, performances and creative spaces. Brisbane is far more experimental and less polished than we expected. But after a few hours of river, art and tropical heat, being this comfortable makes us restless.
So we get back on the bikes and head north. It’s raining. First, we climb into the mountains. Then comes the descent: at first, it feels like a wonderful reward, but before long it turns into a bad idea at full speed. Around us, violently green fields and hills that look almost too perfect to be real; above us, the sky is getting ready to settle the score. And when it does, it doesn’t hold back. It’s a deluge.
We pedal with thunder at our heels and reach the camper just in time. We hunker down at a rest area lost in the darkness. Outside: toads, rain and Queensland. Inside: marshmallows, beer, a good book and enough mangoes to survive a siege.
We’re soaked, exhausted and parked in the rain, twenty thousand kilometres from home.
Pretty much perfect.
