Jerry Reed – The Claw | Guitar Cover by Karla García

A little country groove, a lot of technique, and one unforgettable guitar sound. 🎸 In this video, I’m playing “The Claw,” the iconic instrumental by American guitarist and songwriter Jerry Reed. Released on his 1967 album The Unbelievable Guitar & Voice of Jerry Reed, the piece showcases Reed’s extraordinary approach to the guitar. Known for his distinctive fingerpicking technique, syncopated rhythms, and playful musical personality, Reed created a sound that was entirely his own. The title refers to the distinctive shape and movement of his picking hand, which became closely associated with his signature “claw style.” His playing blends rhythmic drive, melodic lines, bass patterns, and intricate picking into a remarkably full and energetic sound. Interestingly, when fellow guitarist Thom Bresh asked Reed how he came up with the lick for “The Claw,” Reed humorously replied that he didn’t really know — it was simply one of those ideas that came to him. Sometimes, musical originality just happens! The original recording featured Jerry Reed alongside guitarists Wayne Moss and Fred Carter Jr., with Chet Atkins producing the album at RCA Studios in Nashville. For me, exploring music outside my usual repertoire is part of what makes playing the guitar so rewarding. This piece is a wonderful reminder that technique is not just about precision or speed — it’s also about groove, imagination, and finding your own musical voice.
