Two in the morning, 31 July 1715. A hurricane drives eleven Spanish treasure ships onto the reefs of Florida. By dawn only one of them is still in one piece — a fat, ugly Dutch-built cargo ship called the Urca de Lima. 🔔 Subscribe for a new shipwreck story every two days:    / @saltandgold1622   If you watched Black Sails, you know her as the richest prize in the Caribbean. The real ship carried cowhides, chocolate and vanilla. What she really did was keep the survivors alive on an empty beach — and what happened on that beach next created the Republic of Pirates in Nassau: Henry Jennings's raid on the Spanish salvage camp, Bellamy, Blackbeard, Charles Vane. Then the story jumps 250 years: a building contractor named Kip Wagner finds old coins on a Florida beach after storms, reads a 1775 book in the Library of Congress, and finds the survivors' camp — and a carpet of gold on the seabed. The Queen of Spain's lost wedding jewels come back up in 1993. And the Urca de Lima herself is still there: 200 yards off a Florida beach, in about twelve feet of water. You can swim to her. ⚓ Chapters 0:00 The one ship that survived 0:48 What Black Sails got wrong 1:31 Spain is broke 2:15 Two years stuck in Veracruz 3:06 A wedding gift for the queen 3:39 The ugly ship: the Urca de Lima 4:22 Cowhides and chocolate 4:54 Twelve ships leave Havana 5:38 Sailing in hurricane season 6:26 The storm 7:25 The ship that got away 7:56 The Urca runs aground 8:15 Morning on the beach 9:01 The ship that fed them 9:42 Diving for silver 10:31 Why Spain burned the Urca 11:18 A governor's invitation 12:11 The raid 12:59 The barber's share 13:44 Coming back for more 14:24 Bellamy's double-cross 15:14 Nassau 15:57 The Republic of Pirates 16:55 The pardon 17:37 Forgotten for two hundred years 18:19 1928: the Urca is found 19:20 Kip Wagner 20:08 A map in the Library of Congress 20:53 The survivors' camp 21:28 Real Eight 21:51 The dragon chain 22:29 A carpet of gold 23:19 The Treasure Coast 23:35 The Queen's jewels 24:27 Still washing up 25:12 The Urca today 25:52 The Black Sails legend 26:36 Would you have fought? 📖 Sources Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urca_de...
