From Tree to Treatment: The Story of Pharmakina in the Hills of Kivu

This film follows the journey of quinine from tree to treatment — a journey that connects scientific research, sustainable agriculture, local communities, and pharmaceutical production in the hills of Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo. In the highlands of Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, thousands of farming families cultivate cinchona trees, the natural source of quinine. Through Pharmakina's network of farmers, Centers of Excellence, nurseries, collection centers, and production facilities, each step contributes not only to the fight against malaria, but also to the livelihoods of communities across the region. For many families, cinchona cultivation represents a long-term commitment spanning generations. Farmers receive seedlings, technical support, access to healthcare services, and opportunities to diversify their income while preserving biodiversity and protecting local ecosystems.
