An adventurous beginning gives way to confusion, exile and loss before slowly rebuilding into a powerful heroic finale. Expressive noble male vocals and a broad mixed choir reflect Yvain’s journey from celebrated knight to broken wanderer — and finally to a man worthy of his honor once more. “Honor After the Fall” tells the story of Sir Yvain, one of the great Knights of the Round Table and the hero of one of medieval Arthurian literature’s most enduring tales. The Legend Behind Sir Yvain: Yvain is best known from Chrétien de Troyes’ 12th-century romance “Yvain, the Knight of the Lion,” although related traditions also appear in the Welsh tale “Owain, or the Lady of the Fountain.” His story begins when Yvain hears how his cousin Calogrenant was defeated at a mysterious enchanted fountain. Determined to avenge the humiliation, Yvain secretly travels to the fountain, pours water upon its magical stone and summons a violent supernatural storm. The guardian of the fountain, the knight Esclados, arrives to confront him. Yvain defeats and mortally wounds Esclados, but soon finds himself trapped inside the dead knight’s castle. There he receives the help of Lunete, a clever and loyal lady who hides him from those searching for the killer. While concealed within the castle, Yvain sees Esclados’ widow, Laudine, and falls deeply in love with her. Through Lunete’s persuasion, Laudine eventually accepts Yvain as her new husband and protector of the fountain. Yvain appears to have achieved everything a knight could desire: victory, love, status and a place of honor. But his greatest failure comes not on the battlefield. His friend Sir Gawain persuades him to return to Arthur’s court and take part in tournaments and adventures. Laudine allows Yvain to leave on one condition — he must return within one year. Yvain agrees. Then he forgets. Caught up in the glory of knighthood, he allows the promised year to pass. When Laudine’s messenger arrives and publicly declares that Yvain has betrayed his word, his entire identity collapses. Overcome by shame and grief, Yvain loses his reason. He abandons society, tears away his clothing and wanders the wilderness like a wild man until he is eventually healed with the help of a magical ointment. From this point onward, Yvain’s story becomes one of redemption. During his travels he witnesses a lion battling a serpent. Yvain chooses to save the lion, and the grateful animal becomes his loyal companion. From then on he is remembered as the Knight of the Lion. Together they face giants, hostile knights, imprisonment and injustice. Yvain rescues the innocent, protects the vulnerable and even saves Lunete when she is falsely accused and condemned to death. These deeds are important because Yvain is no longer fighting merely for fame. He is slowly rebuilding the honor he destroyed when he broke his promise. Eventually, through another carefully arranged intervention by Lunete, Yvain returns to the enchanted fountain. Laudine ultimately learns that the mysterious Knight of the Lion who has proven himself through so many noble deeds is Yvain himself. The two are reconciled. Yvain’s legend therefore becomes more than a tale of tournaments and heroic combat. It is a medieval story about responsibility, broken promises, madness, loyalty and redemption. A knight may fall through pride and failure — but true honor is revealed by what he chooses to become afterward. Listen to the legend. Discover the myth.
