Porch light's on.
An old white farmhouse in the rural South, a porch swing on its chains, a warm lamp, an old oak with Spanish moss and open fields at dusk. A man in his fifties sits down with a cup of coffee on the same swing where his father used to sit. And the words come back, one by one, the way they always do once you're grown.
My Daddy Once Told Me is the seventh chapter of the album The Strength of an Honest Man, the quietest moment of the story. A father's advice you only understand when you pass it on yourself. Don't rush the river. Keep your word like gold. Hold your woman when she cries, and never let the sun go down with anger in your eyes. A bus leaving for the city, a handshake at the fence, a red haired woman leaning in the screen door. An old harmonica taken from a wooden box, played on the porch steps and finally placed in his own son's hand.
A tender blues ballad at 58 bpm, fingerpicked acoustic guitar, soft slide and a harmonica that sings like a voice. A warm raspy baritone close to the microphone and a bridge spoken barely above a whisper. Son, I wasn't perfect. But I loved you every single day.
Porch light's still on.
