Can Chennai move from just measuring how much water we receive to also understanding how safe the water journey appears — from the public network to the building connection? In Episode 17 of Beyond the Obvious, I explore a practical AI concept: 💧 Smart Meter — How much water? 🛡️ Safe Meter — What does available sensor data and verified testing tell us about water safety? The idea is Chennai WaterGuard-AI — a citizen-led proof of concept combining: • Water-network sensors • AI anomaly detection • Pressure, flow, turbidity, chlorine and pH monitoring • Laboratory verification • Water Digital Twin concepts • Field-team decision support • Separate building sump/tank hygiene tracking • Simple citizen-facing water status Importantly, this is not a complaint about Chennai Metro Water. Tamil Nadu already has significant water infrastructure and continues working toward safe and effective urban water delivery. My question is simply: Can AI help us make an evolving system even smarter, more measurable and more transparent? One important distinction: Public Network ≠ Building Hygiene Once water reaches a private building, sump cleanliness, overhead-tank maintenance and internal plumbing also matter. We should first identify where an issue originates rather than automatically assigning blame. The practical approach We don't need to transform all of Chennai overnight. Start with: 1 Zone → 6-Month Pilot → Measure → Learn → Improve Measure alert accuracy, response time, test results, operator usefulness and citizen feedback. Then let data decide whether the idea deserves to scale. The project uses synthetic/demo data only and does not connect to Chennai Metro Water, Government systems, SCADA, valves or operational infrastructure. AI anomaly detection is also not a substitute for laboratory water-quality testing. Not as a finished solution. Not as criticism. But as a small citizen contribution toward better governance through AI. Smart Meter tells us how much. Safe Meter helps us understand how safe.
