Gatabaruwa Rajamaha Viharaya, situated near Kotapola in the Matara District, is an ancient Buddhist sacred site traditionally believed to date back to the reign of King Walagamba (103–77 BCE). According to local tradition, the caves at Gatabaruwa provided refuge to the king during a period of South Indian invasions. The temple is also closely associated with the worship of Rajjuru Bandara Deviyo, making it an important religious and cultural centre in southern Sri Lanka. For centuries, the site is said to have been hidden within the forest. In 1834, a hunter named Eliyas Hami reportedly discovered the ancient cave and an approximately 18-riyan reclining Buddha statue while pursuing a deer. Following the discovery, local devotees cleared the area and helped restore the site as a place of Buddhist worship. Today, Gatabaruwa Rajamaha Viharaya is renowned as a historic pilgrimage site and is popularly known as “Ruhunu Panchi Kataragama.” මාතර දිස්ත්‍රික්කයේ කොටපොල අසල පිහිටි ගැටබරුව රජමහා විහාරය, වලගම්බා රජුගේ (ක්‍රි.පූ. 103–77) රාජ්‍ය සමයට අයත් යැයි සාම්ප්‍රදායිකව විශ්වාස කෙරෙන පුරාණ බෞද්ධ සිද්ධස්ථානයකි. දකුණු ඉන්දීය ආක්‍රමණ පැවති සමයේදී රජුට ආරක්ෂාව සැපයූ ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ගැටබරුව ප්‍රදේශයේ පිහිටි ගුහා භාවිත වූ බවට ජනප්‍රවාදයේ සඳහන් වේ. එසේම, මෙම විහාරය රාජ්ජුරු බණ්ඩාර දෙවියන් ඇදහීම හා සමීපව බැඳී පවතින අතර, ඒ හේතුවෙන් එය දකුණු ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ වැදගත් ආගමික හා සංස්කෘතික මධ්‍යස්ථානයක් බවට පත්ව ඇත. මෙම ස්ථානය සියවස් ගණනාවක් පුරා වනාන්තරය තුළ සැඟවී පැවති බව පැවසේ. 1834 වසරේදී, එලියාස් හාමි නම් දඩයක්කරුවෙකු මුවෙකු පසුපස හඹා යමින් සිටියදී මෙම පුරාණ ගුහාව සහ රියන් 18ක් පමණ දිගැති සැතපෙන බුද්ධ ප්‍රතිමාවක් සොයාගත් බව සඳහන් වේ. මෙම සොයාගැනීමෙන් අනතුරුව, ප්‍රදේශවාසී බැතිමතුන් එම ප්‍රදේශය එළිපෙහෙළි කර, මෙම ස්ථානය බෞද්ධ වන්දනා ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ප්‍රතිසංස්කරණය කිරීමට දායක වූහ. අද වන විට ගැටබරුව රජමහා විහාරය ඓතිහාසික වන්දනා ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ප්‍රකටව පවතින අතර, එය "රුහුණු පංච කතරගම" යන නාමයෙන්ද ජනප්‍රියව හැඳින්වේ.
