Welcome to the second episode of our new series, "The Eye of Séverac." Today, I am performing "La Vasque aux Colombes" (The Pigeons' Basin) from his suite "En vacances" (Book 2). This piece holds a profoundly deep backstory. Séverac himself could not finish it before his passing, so his close friend and brilliant pianist, Blanche Selva, completed the second half. As I practiced and connected with this music, I realized she didn't merely use her musical knowledge to finish it; she poured her deep affection and a "token of true friendship" into the notes. While the title might bring a specific image to mind, playing this on a historical 150-year-old piano made me feel something different. It wasn't about pigeons, but rather the reflection of light, the sparkle of transparency, and the recreation of time and space. As indicated by his marking "Lontano" (from afar), Séverac acts as a musical time traveler, recalling events from the distant past. His music is so pure and honest that it demands the performer to completely let go of their ego and any desire for evaluation.
