Narrated by Rose
It is March 1815, in a small red-brick house in a Hampshire village. Jane Austen is thirty-nine, her name is on none of her books, and she is very close to finishing a novel called Emma.
Tonight we spend one ordinary day with her at Chawton Cottage, from the dark hour before dawn until the last candle is put out. We hear her play the pianoforte while the house is still asleep, make the breakfast and unlock the tea caddy, write at her little walnut table with the creaking door to warn her, and walk with Cassandra up the lane to the Great House. In the evening the women gather by the fire with their needlework, read aloud by candlelight, and Jane sits down to write a letter to her niece Fanny.
Along the way we meet the women who shared the house with her: her sister Cassandra, her mother, her dear friend Martha Lloyd, and the servants who kept the fires lit and the kettle singing. The day is gathered from the memories of her nieces and nephews and from the family's own letters, and wherever we can't be sure of something, Rose tells you so.
The narration lasts about 72 minutes, followed by gentle rain and soft music by the fire, with the picture slowly dimming, so you can drift off and stay asleep.
Tip: turn off autoplay or set a sleep timer, so another video doesn't start and wake you.
