The Gambia is about 320 km long, less than 50 km wide, and surrounded by Senegal on three sides. It is basically a river with borders. This video explains why Africa's smallest mainland country has that shape: the 1889 Anglo-French boundary line, the "cannon-shot" legend (tested against the documents), the Senegambia Confederation of 1982-1989, and the 2019 Senegambia Bridge. You will see why the Gambia River was worth carving up, what the 1889 treaty and the 1904 parliamentary debate actually say, why a union of Senegal and The Gambia fell apart, how ferries, blockades and a bridge shape daily life, and what Africa's colonial borders still decide today. Claims are attributed and sourced; where the record is silent we say so.
