In 1668 the King of England rented the island of Bombay to a trading company for £10 a year. Today it is Mumbai, India's financial capital, with more than twelve million people. How did a Portuguese princess's dowry, a handover that nearly failed, a stubborn governor and a lot of landfill turn seven marshy islands into one of the biggest cities on Earth?
The thesis: Mumbai is a city made by treaties and landfill. We follow the Koli fishing villages, the Treaty of Bassein, the 1661 marriage treaty of Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, the 1668 lease to the East India Company, Gerald Aungier's open-door town, the Hornby Vellard sea wall, the causeways, the cotton boom and bust, and the costs of a city built on reclaimed land.
