A queen was dragged into a royal court and humiliated in front of her family. Her five mighty husbands could not save her, and the elders said nothing. Then came a miracle no one in that hall would ever forget. The Pandavas had built a shining kingdom at Indraprastha, and their cousin Duryodhana burned with jealousy. His uncle Shakuni, a master of dice, made a plan: invite Yudhishthira, who could never refuse a challenge, to a game of dice. Despite Vidura's warning, Yudhishthira played and lost his wealth, his kingdom, his brothers and himself. Then Duryodhana told him to stake Draupadi, and he lost her too. Dushasana dragged Draupadi into the court by her hair. She asked a question that silenced the hall: if her husband had already lost himself, how could he stake her? Bhishma lowered his head, Drona looked away, and only Vidura spoke for her. When Duryodhana ordered Dushasana to pull away her sari, Draupadi let go, raised her hands and called on Krishna. The sari kept coming, yard after yard of shining cloth, until Dushasana collapsed, exhausted. Bhima swore to tear open Dushasana's chest and break Duryodhana's thigh, bad omens filled the palace, and a frightened Dhritarashtra gave Draupadi boons. She used them to free her husbands. But one more game sent the Pandavas and Draupadi into thirteen years of exile, and that day the seeds of the Kurukshetra war were sown. Retold from the Mahabharata of Vyasa (Sabha Parva: the dice game, Draupadi's question, the disrobing and the boons; Anudyuta Parva: the second game and the exile). Details vary across texts and retellings. In the Critical Edition the endless cloth appears without Krishna being named, while popular and devotional versions describe Draupadi calling on Krishna (Govinda) and Krishna protecting her, as told here.
