He was born wearing golden armour that no weapon could pierce. One morning, he cut it from his own body and gave it away. Why? As a young princess, Kunti served the fierce sage Durvasa so patiently that he gave her a secret mantra to call any god and receive a child from him. Curious, she tested it on the rising sun, and Surya, the sun god, appeared. Her son was born shining like the dawn, with golden armour (the kavach) and golden earrings (the kundal) as part of his body. Unmarried and afraid of the shame, Kunti set the baby afloat on the river. The charioteer Adhiratha and his wife Radha found him and raised him with love, and the world knew him as Karna, Radheya, the son of a charioteer. Karna became a mighty archer, famous for one thing above all: after his morning prayer to the sun, he never refused anyone who asked. As the great war drew near, Indra, king of the gods and Arjuna's father, knew that Arjuna could not win while Karna wore that armour. Surya warned Karna in a dream, but Karna chose his word over his life. When Indra came disguised as a poor brahmin, Karna cut away his armour and earrings and gave them, smiling. Ashamed and moved, Indra gave him the Vasavi Shakti, a spear that could be used only once, the weapon Karna would later be forced to use on Ghatotkacha. Retold from the Mahabharata of Vyasa (Karna's birth in the Adi Parva; the gift of the armour and earrings in the Vana Parva, Kundala-harana). Details vary across texts and retellings: some versions have Surya's warning earlier, or describe Indra giving the Shakti in exchange rather than as a blessing.
