0:00 How Australian engineers are replacing diesel-powered mining equipment with battery-electric technology.
3:03 battery electric locomotives
10:21 Lectra Hall
11:11 Roadrunner
11:48 Europa
12:49 solar farm
14:38 6-megawatt fast charger
I take you inside the Australian engineering story challenging diesel’s grip on mining.
I explore how Fortescue converted a 240-tonne haul truck, developed battery-electric locomotives for the Pilbara, and used regenerative braking, solar power and a six-megawatt charger to replace diesel in heavy industry. I also look at Roadrunner, Europa and the electric drive technology that has been inside giant mining trucks since 1963.
I follow the deals with Liebherr and XCMG, the role of batteries from electric racing, and the obstacles that forced Fortescue to abandon some of its bigger ideas. The result is an Australian playbook for powering trucks, trains, excavators, dozers and drills with energy generated close to the mines.
