A prince was insulted in front of the whole court. Three courtiers suggested three harsh punishments, but Harun al-Rashid’s answer silenced them all. Sheikh Saadi’s tale from the Gulistan holds the real lesson about anger and self-control.

⚠️ Note: This is a retelling inspired by Saadi’s short story (Gulistan, Chapter 1, Story 34). In the original, one of Harun al-Rashid’s sons angrily complains that an official’s son insulted him. The courtiers suggest death, cutting out the tongue, or a fine and imprisonment. Harun tells his son that forgiving would be the nobler course, but if he cannot, he may answer the insult in kind, never exceeding the offence. Saadi follows with a verse that the real man is the one who speaks no idle words when angry, and a short tale of a man who answers abuse by saying he is worse than the abuser claims, since he knows his own faults better. The banquet setting, the prince’s reactions, the personalities of the three courtiers and the marketplace scene are added for storytelling.
