The Aussie Backyard Ultra Team Ep4: Mat Dube

Episode four of my series interviewing every runner on the Australian team heading to the Backyard Ultra World Championships this October. This one's with Mat Dube, winner of the Melbourne Frontyard Ultra this year with 73 laps and 489km. I was out there with him for most of it and finished third, so this one was pretty special to sit down and chat about. Mat locked in his spot on the team last September at GV Backyard Ultra in Shepparton, running 60 yards and 400km to win the silver ticket and take the race out for the fourth year in a row. Then at Melbourne he beat myself, Ben Nicholls and the rest of the field. We talk about how he got into backyard ultras, what changed between 2025 and 2026, racing Ben, and what was going through his head in those last few laps at Melbourne.
