Waking up at 2 or 3 AM with your mind racing? A pharmacist explains what peanut butter at bedtime can and can't do after 50, and the real reasons behind those middle-of-the-night wake-ups.
You fall asleep fine. Then you snap awake at 2:47 AM, wired, and lie there until the alarm. Most people treat this as a sleep problem. Often it's a timing problem.
In this video, I break down what happens in your body hour by hour overnight and why three things are usually behind a 3 AM wake-up:
✅ Cortisol that doesn't drop low enough at night. After 50, your nighttime cortisol low point tends to rise.
✅ Blood sugar dips in the early morning hours. Your body releases adrenaline and cortisol to rescue your blood sugar before you ever feel hungry, and that wakes you up wired.
✅ Low melatonin, and the gut connection almost nobody talks about. Your gut affects how much tryptophan reaches your brain to make melatonin.

Try this tonight: Have 1–2 tablespoons of peanut butter around 9 PM for one week. If you sleep through, you've found your trigger. If not, blood sugar isn't the whole story.
