A German engineer who has spent 24 years hauling 6,000-tonne iron ore trains out of Hamburg harbour arrives in Nebraska expecting to recognise the work. Instead he watches a stack train cross over the top of itself on a mountain loop, stands in a rail yard eight miles long, and listens to an American conductor call a seven-thousand-ton consist one of the light ones. By the last evening, standing at the glass of the Golden Spike Tower, Rolf says something about his own career he never expected to say out loud. Rolf is joined by two colleagues, including a rail planner who is professionally immune to size until the yard breaks her. The trip was arranged through a European rail magazine as a working week alongside an American freight crew. The Europeans also make their case back, and the Americans agree with them: for moving people, Europe wins, and it is not close.
